Implants!
Learning that you might be a future denture wearer is bad news for most people, and so are the challenges that many denture wearers face when it comes to eating, speaking, and socializing. However, we have seen first-hand how implant systems have revolutionized the future of dentures, and we can tell you from experience, this is great news!
The dental implant is a simple concept with far-reaching implications. Small posts, usually titanium (the world’s strongest metal), are threaded directly into the maxilla or mandible bones. Aside from being very strong and highly compatible with our biology, these artificial roots go through a process called osseointegration which knits the metal and bone together. Once in place, dental implants tend to remain very stable. They have a long and successful track record dating back to the 1950s.
When a tooth is lost, the bone that once held it begins to waste away from lack of use. Bone is a tissue like muscle and needs to work to be strong, so implants stop bone from wasting away while making it stronger and preventing the jaw from having that inward collapsing appearance.
We understand that dental implants are not always a realistic option for everyone – especially those who began wearing dentures before the advances that technology and modern dentistry have made possible. As dental professionals, our first choice for tooth replacement is implants. If you are someone who has missing teeth, or a denture wearer, please feel free to ask us if dental implants are a good option for you!
